Music Photography Research - Marcus Maschwitz

Marcus Maschwitz is a photographer who specialises in music and band photography including live music photography, portrait photography, and album photography. His photography shows off the bands style as well as the style of the individual in what they are wearing or how they are posed.

This photograph of the band ‘Young Guns’ shows their brooding attitude in a dark alley end at what looks like the service entrance to a hotel. The red light in the back of the picture gives you the feel of a night time scene in downtown Manhattan, where all is quiet and these boys are just hanging around and being cool.

The photograph also shows a good comparison to the style of music that the band plays. ‘Young Guns’ are an Alternative Rock band from Buckinghamshire in England and this shows the classical moody look of rock bands, with the style of modernised alternative bands you see popping up in today’s charts.

This photograph shows a combination of live and individual photography, showing the lead singer of band ‘Papa Roach’, Jacoby Shaddix singing into the microphone at what looks like a live event. This gives the loud, boisterous, dark impression that follows most nu-metal bands.

By singling the lead singer of the band out in an individual portrait, you can see the style of music and the general style of the band by singling out certain aspects of it. The vest shows off Jacoby’s tattoos, showing that they are important to him and he is proud of them, giving an insight into his life and that of the band. the way he is posed shows that he is not singing in the traditional sense but doing so very loudly down the microphone showing a heavy style of music that the artist is passionate about.
